The Lehigh Cement application to add Alternative Low Carbon Fuels to it’s list of acceptable burning fuels. ERO #019-6462 Ministry Reference #4077-CLQLST
It is concerning to learn that Lehigh Cement’s proposal to add ALCFs is being considered for approval
while having only limited information concerning potential environmental hazards associated with its use and no concrete regulations for monitoring the full scope of toxic emissions that will enter the air in the process. It is my opinion that further study and planning must be completed before considering this application for approval.
This is a matter that will affect the livelihoods of every person in Prince Edward County, now and in generations to come.
Government and Industry alike want to be able to show that they are making efforts and progress toward reducing Green House Omissions, but too often because it makes them look good politically and even better if the proposed solution is cheaper – these motivating factors should not be first priority, and rushing the process is reckless. It is of no benefit to replace one fuel with another that creates equal to or maybe more environmental damage. The potential for irreversible harm is high when proper research and planning for monitoring are not in place. It is the health of the people in our community that is at risk, the good natured people that trust the government and local industry to make responsible decisions on their behalf, regarding such things as the approvals of processes producing dangerous pollutants.
I believe that before any further consideration is given to approving this proposal, there needs to be more commitment given by Lehigh Cement and the Ontario Government to
ensure a more inclusive understanding of the associated public health and safety risks and to build strict requirements for pollution control and monitoring.
Thoughts from a local citizen.
You don’t have to be a scientist to now that such elements as benzene, chlorine and dioxins being off gassed into the direct air we breath is most definitely a dangerous health hazard. Maybe try to give it the thorough consideration that it deserves before deciding how to proceed.
Thank you for your time.
