The North Williams Mine is located 35 km southeast of Shining Tree at UTM Coordinates Zone 17 498204E 5251418N in the Territorial District of Timiskaming, Larder Lake Mining Division. Access to the North Williams mine is via the Sandy Lake forest access road off Highway 560. Turn off Highway 560 onto the Sandy Lake forest access road approximately 1 km east of the Lower Opikinimika Lake bridge. Travel east on the Sandy Lake Road for approximately 17.3 km then turn south on the Tracey Lake Road and travel approximately 15.1 km south to the entrance of the mine site.

Description of instrument
A Director’s Order will be issued to Extender Minerals of Canada Limited, Robert Hill, requiring the proponent to file within a certain date, an amendment to the certified mine closure plan with the ENDM as required under S. 143(2) of the Mining Act. The proponent is required to have a certified mine closure plan for the mine hazards on site. This closure plan amendment will propose rehabilitation measures to be implemented at the Mine site.
The North Williams Mine site is a inactive barite mine. The proposed rehabilitation work will include description of work to be completed.
The following are some of the major components of this closure plan that need to be addressed by the proponent:
- The current state of the crown pillar stability is unknown
- There is no financial assurance for the removal and disposal of pipelines
- There is no financial assurance for the removal and disposal of waterlines
- There is no financial assurance for the removal and disposal of storage tanks
- There is no financial assurance for the removal of remaining petroleum products
- There is no financial assurance for the removal of any chemicals
- There is no financial assurance for the removal of waste
- There is no financial assurance for the removal of explosives
- There is no financial assurance for the testing, clean-up and disposal of contaminated soils
- There is no financial assurance for the pumping and removal of the septic tank(s)
Specific mine hazards at this site include:
- one vent raise
- one portal
- open cut
- crown pillar
- two mine water settling ponds
- waste rock areas
- equipment, storage tanks, petroleum products, pipelines, waterlines, chemicals, waste, explosives, septic tank(s)
- contaminated soils
The required closure plan amendment with accompanying financial assurance will be submitted in a form and manner in accordance with Ontario Regulation 240/00, including the Mine Rehabilitation Code of Ontario.

This notice is for your information and comment. The Environmental Bill of Rights requires this notice to be placed on the Environmental Registry.
This is a 30-day Notice required prior to the issuance of a Director’s Order; this Order will require the proponent to file an amendment to a certified closure plan.
