Please do not approve this request. For years now, the communities of Rockcliffe-Smythe the Stockyards district and the Junction have been exposed to daily treatments of putrid smells coming from the slaughter houses and meat processing plants on Glen Scarlett Road. Those smells travel many kilometers from the source, carrying who know what with them, potentially putting the health of those in contact with the smells at increased risk of health problems. This includes young elementary school students who attend Harwood Public School and Santa Maria Catholic School, in addition to the hundreds of children who use Maple Claire park during the summer months, which is situated just a few meters from St Helen's. You cannot continue to support these types of industries where residential neighborhoods are being established and gentrifying. The development work that is being undertaken on St Clair and Gunns is just one example of how this area is changing for the better, by bringing in residents and eventually businesses which will contribute to the greater life of the area's residents and not against them. Albeit, i understand that St Helen's and the rest of the meatpacking plants on Glen Scarlett employ dozens of people, but at what cost? The cost of the livelihood of thousands of residents in the area affected by the smells and off gases which these plants produce? Not to mention the evidence of illegal animal torture that is also taking place within these plants. I drive along Glen Scarlett on a regular basis, and the things that i have witnessed would make anyone's stomach turn. But the point is, that this request by St Helen's should not be approved on the sole basis that the health of the people who live in the areas adjacent to St Helen's will be put at greater risk than it already is and greatly affect the children of the area. If you need further evidence, all you have to do is stand outside my house and you will see the impacts that these industries have on our lives.
