I am extremely disappointed to see yet another step backwards in the revitalization efforts around
the Rockcliffe-Smythe neighbourhood. Just as things are finally starting to move in the right
direction, with a mixture of residential and business development, and away from meat packing
facilities, in the last year two remaining meat packers are attempting to increase their footprint.
The emissions from the existing facilities are already a problem. There are days when the air
quality around the Stockyards shopping centre and residential areas that surround it, is extremely
poor and the smell is disgusting. Land within the city needs to be used for people. Businesses
such as Ryding-Regency Meat Packers Ltd. should be encouraged to move away from residential areas,
and certainly not given greater powers to pollute the air quality and lower the quality of life
that surrounds it. I strongly oppose any changes that would allow greater emissions and more
pollution being generated from Ryding-Regency Meat Packers Ltd. At a time when climate change is
an ever increasing problem and housing in Toronto is at a crisis level, neighbourhoods need to be
protected and improved, and all efforts should be directed toward improving the air quality, not
allowing business interests to increase emissions and pollution levels.
