I am concerned about the Ancaster Golf and Country Club being allowed a ten year renewal of their application to take water from the Ancaster Creek.
Ten years ago, before there was as much information about climate change, perhaps concerns about taking unlimited water to keep golf greens pristine were not considered. But to give the club unlimited access to water, that might mean that the creek runs low and impacts wildlife down stream, does not seem sensible in 2023.
There are so many questions that I feel need answering:
Can the Golf club give estimates of how much water they use in a summer period?
Are there other sources for water if the creek is seen to be running dry.?
Who will monitor the creek each summer?
Will water only be taken once a week?
Will sprinklers take water even if there has been recent rainfall?
Is there any charge made for this water - such as to the city or Conservation Authority?
One suggestion might be that the renewal be for a shorter period 3 or 5 years and has restrictions attached that the golf club need to adhere to - such as monitoring the times and amount of water taken and an engaging an expert hydrologist to follow the impacts that might occur to the creek.
In hotter climates different types of grasses are planted by golf clubs that require less watering. This might also be something the club could consider. They would then be showing that they can still maintain great recreational facilities but they would not be damaging parts of the local environment that other members of the public enjoy.
