St Helen's Meat Packers is one of, if not the last vestige of an industry that no longer belongs within the city limits. Moreso it does not belong in such close proximity to residential neighborhoods, and schools. The idea of considering their application to increase their emissions is a slap in the face to resident's who live nearby. We are a priority community, we are on a flood plain. Their contributions to the polluting of our greenspaces can be seen all along lavender creek as their waste spills out over their work sites and on to municipal property. Their presence in the area has polluted lavender creek and contributed to the pollution in Black Creek which is home to several species of birds, bats and other animals who no doubt suffer the effects of the pollution. Children at nearby schools no doubt inhale the gases that are spewed out by St. Helen's and chemicals leach out into the surrounding soil. Environmental agencies and our city councilors have already approved the expansion of their operations to 300 Rockcliffe Ct. Just down the street from my home, in very close proximity to 2 schools and directly on top of Black Creek further jeopardizing the naturalization of the green spaces in the area and jeopardizing home owners who are at a greater risk of flooding because they will be paving our the flood plane. I am strongly opposed to allowing St Helen's to increase their emissions. We do not need more pollution in an area that is already highly polluted and in desperate need of naturalization. Keep in mind the site is surrounded by residential neighborhoods and families. If St. Helen's needs to increase their emissions let them do so outside of the city limits away from families and schools. Let them relocate to a better area so that our neighborhoods can naturalize and recover from the decades of neglect at the hands of industry. Don't allow them to put out more pollution in our communities.
