Fantastic proposal. I cannot give you a professional or a legal opinion, however I will give a “layman’s” opinion on it. Too many companies in Hamilton, in particular in my Ward (Ward 4) or in Ward 3 are either not complying with basic standards or are asking for Site Specific Standards to emit more harmful chemicals into the air above the “healthy” standard, directly affecting citizens, grasslands and waterways. Enough is enough. The city smells, it’s sometimes so hard to breathe, we stay inside. Everything outdoors is black from the contaminants floating and polluting the air then settling on decks and patio furniture etc. It isn’t as simple as getting up and moving to another area of the city, or another area altogether. Profit shouldn’t compromise people’s and the environment’s health and it’s disgusting to assume that Hamilton residents should just sit back and cop it. We care about the city, we want to be able to keep companies accountable and ensure they are following environmental standards as the bare minimum. Please find ways to apply a similar proposal to other companies in the area, for the health of everybody. I know Rain Carbon and Stelco want to extend their SSS, please don’t allow it -I’m sure they are also not complying in one form or another.
