We here at the NAN are against the Minaki on the River development on the Winnipeg River. We believe this will have an impact not only on our water supply but all living things in the Winnipeg River system. There was no consultation with our First Nation on this development or even information shared. This development application has answered no to some of the questions stating that this will impact a water body, is the project adjacent to a First Nation, is the applicant aware of concerns from indigenous communities about the project. It is obvious that they do not care or worried about our First Nations concerns. We are united with Wabaseemoong First Nation and the residents of Minaki on the Winnipeg River in opposing this development. We as First Nations people have a great respect for the land, water, air and all living things as part of our culture, heritage and inherent responsibility to oversee the protection of the natural resources for future generations. We oppose the use of this sewage treatment plant in Minake that is designed to release effluent into the Winnipeg River. We here on the Winnipeg River have experienced effluent damage to our river system from the Kenora pulp and paper mills. Our river system is starting to clean up now over the years and now we have to go through more pollution. We have also started a sturgeon recovery program partnered up with Rainy River First Nation and MNRF in our third year and this project will also have an impact on our sturgeon recovery project.
