Original proposal
Proposal details
1-octanol is a new pesticide ingredient contained in the following end use product 1,4Zap (Reg. No. 33492), that is proposed for classification in Ontario.
Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency assesses pesticides for their risks to human health and the environment, and examines the efficacy and value of pest control products in registering products under the Pest Control Products Act for sale and use.
PCP Registration No.: 33492
- product name: 1,4Zap
- product type: plant growth regulator
- formulation: liquid
- active ingredient:1-octanol (99%)
- federal classification: commercial
- pests and use area: applied post-harvest in stored potatoes to inhibit sprouting and encourage dormancy
- provisional class: 3
Although the end use product mentioned above meets all hazard criteria for Class 4 pesticides (less or least hazardous), the Ontario Pesticides Advisory Committee has recommended that the above product be classified as a Class 3 pesticides based on the federal label directions and precautionary statements for users and applicators. The product label specifies that early-entry workers entering into the treated areas during application, or prior to ventilation or settling of aerosol fog, must wear a respirator with a NIOSH-approved organic vapour-removing cartridge with a prefilter approved for pesticides or a NIOSH-approved-canister approved for pesticides.
Class 3 pesticides are federally designated as restricted or commercial products, and are moderately hazardous. Class 3 pesticides may be used by licensed exterminators and certified growers who are trained and knowledgeable in their proper use.
