As property owners in the immediate vicinity of this facility we oppose the increase in permitted tonnage. As it is, this is an inappropriate location for a waste transfer facility. This area is evolving into an important node of economic activity which will be threatened by the unsightliness of the facility itself and its garbage piles as well as additional noise, odour and truck traffic. It is already common for trucks to line up on both sides of Sheffield for lengthy periods awaiting access to the facility, spewing polluting exhaust, blocking traffic and creating dangerous situations for vehicles attempting to pass. Increased truck traffic will interfere with more important economic activity that is moving into the area. Serious consideration must also be given to the inevitable impact of the increased amount of waste on the soil and ground water under the facility and neighboring properties. Increasing the capacity of this facility will only impede ongoing efforts to regenerate the area, depress property values which in turn will depress property tax revenues.
