Hello,
Looking over the proposal and details, the most surprising note is that total amount of damage and destruction, up to 33 acres. It mentions in the details that there will be no direct impacts like killing the species, which seems highly unlikely.
It is not clear how an overall benefit to the species will be achieved, rather it seems the complete opposite. I understand the alternatives have been reviewed and I agree that I don't see a win for the species at all, the main concern is the total amount of habitat loss, considering this is a rather large project.
It would be interesting to see and hear about the conservation easement, size and the monitoring of the area after the project, which I imagine would be minimal and used as a dumping area for the facility when the project is finished. However, if proper artificial nesting sites, erecting signage and maintenance is done, I think that is a positive initiative. Does there exist the opportunity to create a viewing area for the users of the trailer park that educates them about the species (of course which doesn't interfere and is minimal in construction).
Perhaps additional tree planting and can be done elsewhere to minimize total forest loss, such as 3 additional trees planted for every 1 removal of a tree, especially large mature trees (I cant see this costing much with tree saplings). In addition, perhaps money or efforts can be used elsewhere to support these species at risk populations, such as donating money annually to support a conservation effort in the area which helps protect these species at risk habitats. Lastly, does there exist the option to move the species that are found during work to a safe area.
As someone who frequents honey harbor, and also works in the public service in planning, I understand the need for developing waterfront to please the general public, I am disappointed about the size of the project and total loss. I am simply suggesting additional conservation work and actions to compensate for the total loss that is proposed.
Thanks
