Identifying appropriate risk management measures to be implemented is extremely important for us as residents close to this site. We believe that the air monitoring, health and safety planning, and groundwater management are extremely important in keeping our neighbourhood safe. Since many families live in this neighbourhood, we support a more stringent plan than usual to keep our children safe. Furthermore, we are concerned regarding the noise pollution that may result from the development of the property; there may be potential adverse effects on the rest of the neighbourhood and those that are suffering from various medical conditions, as well as those that are considered to be relatively healthy. Studies have demonstrated that exposure to noise does pose as a public health risk, and there exists sufficient evidence that noise exposure can induce hearing impairment, hypertension and ischemic heart disease, annoyance, sleep disturbance, and decreased school performance for children and adolescents. Considering that this neighbourhood already lies close to a major highway, further construction may exacerbate an already-existing problem. Lastly, air pollution is also a pressing concern for us given that there are various green spaces and parks (as well as a school) around the neighbourhood that many families will visit. Subsequent exposure to harmful air pollution resulting from the development of 24 Algoma St.
We propose more stringent measures on the levels of noise production (such as a decibal limit) during the development of the site, and strict measures regarding the level of air pollution and groundwater management for the reassurance of the many families residing in this neighbourhood, including ours. We also have a major preference for preserving the rest of the green space around this neighbourhood, as there is overwhelming scientific research demonstrating that green space serves as excellent protection against both physical and mental health issues and can even act synergistically to induce the adoption of physical activity - all of which finally contributes to the overall happiness of children and productivity of working adults, resulting in further economic success of our city.
