Having recently completed with government approval the construction of some wetlands on our property, which depend on the micro-watershed of the Black Creek, we are very concerned by the proposal to withdraw up to 2.7 million litres per day for unspecified purposes. If it is for washing gravel on site, some water may stay to feed the creek. If it is for washing off site, for road dust control or other purposes, it will be lost to the watershed. We already had our well run dry and most of the wetlands were dry during spells of this hot summer.
The private study commissioned by the pit owner states that water from the pit area flows west to the Horner Creek, when we know that the Black Creek actually starts only a few hundred feet from the pit location. The study also recommends that no monitoring of nearby wells and environmental conditions is necessary. I have seldom heard such self-serving arguments from professional studies.
Previous owners of this same pit stated that they were not allowed to dig below the water table in the pit extension on the south side of Road 12 when they asked for permission for that extension. Now the new owners simply went ahead and dug way below the water table only 100 or 200 ft to the north on the other side of Road 12. The existing pond is to be hugely increased, both in surface area and depth over a similarly large area. It is conceivable that the water that would normally flow into Black Creek can find its way into the expanded pit.
To visualize 2.7 million L, I calculated that it represents a volume roughly 100 ft by 90 ft by 10 ft. There is no way that the flow in the Black Creek could provide this amount, especially in the summer. Where will the water come from?
What will be the effect on local farming operations, woodlands and wetlands and the greater Nith and Grand River watersheds?
Please consider these carefully and do not favour just one possibly destructive industry.
