Long before the aggregate was removed from that quarry, the groundwater of the Onondaga aquifer flowed through that formation of sedimentary rock. When the pumps are turned off and the aquifer returns to it’s pre-quarrying depths, whatever solutes or suspended contaminants that were part of the backfill of excess materials will continue, once again, to flow, but now with a burden of dissolved or suspended materials throughout the aquifer and any rural properties whose inhabitants rely on well water will be forced to decontaminate their water to make it potable. Ask any child if that seems alright to do and I’m sure they’d recommend against it.
