I am writing to register my objection to the proposed permit to Transition Metals Corp. to undertake early exploration activities at One Island Lake (ERO number 019-3249, Ministry Reference #: PR-21-000064).
According to the proposal, proponents are required to follow provincial standards for early exploration to minimize the impacts to public health, safety and the environment from early exploration activities. I have a number of concerns related to public health, safety and the environment stemming from this proposal as well as with any future mining action in this area.
This project has been advanced without informing nearby property owners and thereby allowing to submit comments and/or objections within the allowable timeframe.
The advancement of this project could have detrimental effects on the lake ecosystem, especially since operations will be taking place in close proximity to the lake, which will almost certainly have a negative effect on the riparian area of the lake. Riparian areas are important in maintaining lake ecosystems, by improving water quality, reducing sediment accumulation, regulating surface runoff, and protecting biodiversity, and disturbances in riparian zones can reduce these functions. Mining operations also have the potential to negatively effect the groundwater quality in the area. There will also be negative impacts on wildlife from habitat degradation due to noise pollution, increased road traffic, deforestation and overburden removal, construction of mining infrastructure, and the creation of new trails (as indicated in the project proposal).
