We are so glad we are able to voice our concerns and hopefully be heard regarding DMS! It is wonderful to see a business growing and thriving in Gormley, however over the last several months many of us who live in the area have conversed our issues to each other. It has been a trying time with the constant sounds, Smells and hours of operation. With many of us home for several months we realized the impact DMS has had towards the environment, as well as our properties. We, along with others have placed calls to the town in regards to these concerns, but unfortunately with very little response. We have been told that they do come out and check our concerns and yet tell us that they are in compliance.
Most mornings begin at 6:00 am, and 5:30 am in the summer in which they sometimes continue into the wee hours of the morning. At times trucks have been seen lined up on Woodbine to enter the facility. The sounds of the shredder , cranes , trucks, and their constant beeping , wakes us every morning before the time in which they are allowed to open. The bright lights are on 24/7,which we have no idea why they are on all night if nobody is working at the facility. The noises are so loud you cannot hear the person beside you, and the ground at times vibrates.
Why is DMS allowed to use this metal shredder when they are asking for an environmental approval now, and without following the proper protocols. Im sure we all assumed they were approved to build and use it , especially being so close to the road, and neighbours. The company has 40 acres, could they not have built it back further where the noise would be less of a problem, and furthermore build a structure surrounding it for the safety of the environment. There had been explosion type sounds which would shake the house, and as someone told us could be felt in Old Gormley!
The environmental damage from the sounds, smell, hours of operation and whatever liquids are entering the creek which runs through it , will sure to have some sort of repercussions . As the city is moving closer and closer, so is the wildlife. There are many animals( deer, coyotes, opossums, raccoons, beavers), as well as a vast array of birds including (bats, hawks, herons, eagles , ducks)as well as a variety of fish to name only a few that rely on this area for food and shelter, during both day and night. On the property of DMS the creek that runs through it, is vital for the wildlife’s survival and is an important tributary that heads down to the Rouge.
There was also a large fire this past fall which lasted in total of almost 17 hours, the toxins that must have gone not only into the air as well as the creek will sure to have ramifications for quite some time. This has been the 3rd fire tha has occurred in last 5 years. You would think that after the fire it would be closed for some time, but bright an early the following day, back at it once again. Nothing seems to slow down the facilities 15 hour days.
We , who live in the wonderful hamlet of Gormley are not here to close DMS but rather we would like to see some respect towards the environment and neighbours. Please follow the times that you begin and end your day which is 7: 00am - 5:00 pm, not 6:00 am - ?, shut the lights off during the night, and finally build a structure around the shredder and maybe move the shredder back further on the property. We would love to once again enjoy our yards without the smells, having to yell at each other, and seeing nature at its best.
There will always be some sort of environmental risk when running a facility like DMS, but just maybe it wouldn’t be as devastating if they complied with the all the bylaws.
One of the reasons why we choose to live here is that it was quaint, quiet, close to nature and yet still close to the city. We still love living here in the Oakridges Morraine and proud to be part of the community of Gormley.
Regards,
Concerned neighbour.
