Comment
Good day,
I would like to submit my comment for this proposed CPU. As the landowner of an adjacent property to this site I am not convinced proper analysis has been completed to grant this CPU. Through inquires to the Government of Ontario (GO), including a FOI request, and to Suncor, I have not been provided information that demonstrates the contamination from the site in question has not migrated towards my home. Gas had been found down hill from this site, and my property is also downhill from this site. In posting this notice, it seems like the GO has concluded that the data provided by Suncor is satisfactory, including that it demonstrates no offsite contamination. However, the GO has not been provided with any data from the adjacent properties - so I ask, how can this conclusion be made? The GO has only been provided with data that was collected after the remediation began, after contaminated soil was excavated, and ground water flows were altered. There was no pre-remediation analysis to determine the extent of the contamination spread. It seems like the blinders put on by Suncor in their limited analysis were accepted by the Ministry. This is a frustrating, and disheartening situation to be in- here I am, a homeowner with young children, without the resources of a big oil company and all I am trying for is to be heard, but I don't know if anyone can hear me. Living next to a property that had been neglected, and what seems to have been incompletely remediated is scary. Can I plant vegetables? Would you? Can i eat from the mulberry near the property line? Would you? Should I go into my basement when the CPU conditions will stipulate that the next build on that site would not be allowed to have below grade dwelling? Can my children? Suncor needs to be held accountable for allowing their gas tanks to rust and leak. They need to provide data for the potential spread contamination all around their property, not just where it is convenient. If this CPU is granted at this time then the GO becomes complicit in allowing industry to show disregard for the environment and people. This CPU affects residential homes, not many, but mine being one. But the number shouldn't matter, if it were one, or one thousand, the standard should be the same. I ask that this CPU be reconsidered until such a time that it can be properly demonstrated that there is not a contaminated area larger than has been currently considered.
