I am a resident who received notice of the environmental impact of this proposal 5 days ago. I am disappointed to learn that written notice was open for 50 days, yet the public was NOT informed until day 45.
While attracting business to North Bay is important, I am concerned that this proposal notes that hazardous and noxious particulates will be put into the air. Nowhere do I read how this is to be mitigated, the air flow, the potential health hazard. The two page document shares that I have a right to know yet does not make it easy to be informed.
I am very concerned that the zinc, in this form will be a long term carcinogen. What will be the impact on the drinking water, the ground water, surrounding lakes. Will the fresh water that is consumed in the area be contaminated? I often ride my bicycle in the area. Will the air be contaminated? What level of exposure is acceptable? Will this information be posted prominently at the entrance of the property to ensure that current and future neighbours are fully informed of the risks associated with this business? Will we see foliage in the area negatively affected? The written notice says that noise will be generated. Is this 24 hours per day? Is it restricted to other hours? How is the waste water being managed. Some of the associated articles indicate that this is a enduring concern
Although the ERO may not be able to answer this, why is the plant being located in North Bay? Would it have been better to be located in an area that is already heavily industrialized? More appropriately directed to the City of North Bay, how will traffic be impacted. The industrial park is located in areas that must be accessed either by Airport Road or Carmichael Drive, both residential without street lights and sidewalks. How is this safe for the community?
Having seen businesses come and go in the community, does the plan proposed by Norprop include land remediation when/if the business closes? Has an environmental bond been posted?
I have very concerned that while other galvanizing plants are located in Ontario, the document shared indicates that there insufficient information in the application to allow for a full comparison of the process being proposed in North Bay with other operations. On this basis alone, the project should be placed on hold or cancelled until such time as this information is forwarded to the ERO and all impacted residents
