The area in and around the Stockyards has changed dramatically in the past decade. There are more
homes and more families. It has become more and more residential and with further developments of
condominiums all around us, it will become more and more so. In a city where people are already
exposed to car exaust fumes and many pollutants, to increase the emissions to the air from this
facility to include more ammonia, nitrogen oxides, particulate matter and lactic acid will bring
quality of life down for the residents of the area. It will also possibly deter people from buying
property and therefore have consequences on resale value of homes.
It is already very difficult to not be able to open the windows because of the smell that is
emitted from the slaughterhouses. We sometimes smell it even with the windows closed. Our children
playing in the parks will be affected by this. People shopping at the Stockyards mall will be
affected by this. Imagine taking a nice stroll to go shopping with your family and not wanting to
stay long because you can't stand the smell. Not very good for business.
I implore you not to pass this proposal for the health and well being of the community and think
about the repercusions on the environment as well as the economic consequences that might arise.
Thank you.
