Re: EBR Registry Number 010-6875
I am writing to express my grave concern about the proposal to establish a crushed granite quarry
on the boundaries of Queen Elizabeth II Wildlands Park. I am particularly concerned about the
potential damage to biodiversity, ground water resources and river flows, as well as negative
impacts on the tranquility and wilderness qualities of the Park.
I understand that the quarry proposal will require a “Permit to Take Water " of 8.1 million
litres/day. This has serious implications for both water quality and availability in the area. In
addition, I understand that water produced from dewatering the open pits will be fed into nearby
watercourses, which will then flow into the Cranberry and Head River watersheds. Discharging this
amount of water into the Cranberry River poses a significant threat to this vital watershed, as
much as doubling the flow rate during low flow periods in the summer. Finally, I am also concerned
about the impacts on local communities of the blasting, dust, noise, vibrations, lights, truck
traffic, fuelling and maintenance associated with quarrying of this kind and scale.
For all these reasons, I urge MNR to refuse permission for this quarry application.
